Quick answer: Do not pay again straight away. A failed UPI payment where your account was debited is usually reversed automatically. For a transfer to a person (P2P), the deadline is T+1 (the transaction day plus one working day). For a payment to a shop or app (P2M), it is T+5. If the money is not back by then, RBI's rules say the bank must pay you ₹100 for every day of delay. Raise a complaint in your UPI app first, then with your bank, then on NPCI's portal, and finally with the RBI Ombudsman.
Why does a UPI payment fail after the money is debited?
A UPI payment passes through at least four systems: your app, your bank, NPCI's switch and the receiver's bank. If any link times out after your bank has debited you, the payment shows as failed or pending even though the money left your account. The money is not lost. It is either held for reversal or will be credited to the receiver once the systems reconcile.
Common reasons:
- The receiver's bank server was slow or down
- Network dropped on your phone at the last step
- The receiver's account was closed, frozen or had a limit
- Heavy traffic during sales or festival days
Failed vs pending vs successful: what each status means
| Status in your app | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Successful | Money reached the receiver | Ask the receiver to check; if they did not get it, raise a dispute |
| Pending / Processing | Banks are still confirming | Wait. Do not pay again. Check again after 2–4 hours |
| Failed, money debited | Payment did not go through but your bank debited you | Wait for auto-reversal until T+1 (P2P) or T+5 (merchant) |
| Failed, no debit | Nothing happened | Safe to try again |
UPI refund time: the official deadlines
RBI set fixed timelines (called TAT, turnaround time) for failed digital payments, and compensation if banks miss them.
| Type of failed UPI payment | Auto-reversal deadline | Compensation after deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Sent to a person; your account debited but receiver not credited | T+1 working day | ₹100 per day of delay |
| Paid to a merchant; your account debited but merchant did not get confirmation | T+5 days | ₹100 per day of delay |
T is the day of the transaction. If you paid on a Saturday night and Monday is the next working day, your P2P refund deadline is Monday.
Example: You sent ₹2,500 to a friend on 10 October. It failed but your bank debited you. The refund should be back by 11 October (T+1, if it is a working day). If it arrives on 14 October, that is 3 days late, so the bank owes you ₹300 under the rules.
In practice, compensation is not always credited automatically. If it is not, ask for it in your complaint and quote the RBI circular on turnaround time for failed transactions.
How to complain about a failed UPI payment: 4 levels
Level 1: Your UPI app (fastest)
- Open the app (PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM or your bank app).
- Go to Transaction History and tap the failed payment.
- Tap Raise Dispute, Help or Report a problem.
- Choose a reason such as Money debited but not received by beneficiary.
- Note the complaint ID.
Level 2: Your bank
If the app does not resolve it, contact your bank through customer care, net banking or a branch. Give them:
- The 12-digit UPI transaction ID (UTR)
- Date, time and amount
- A screenshot of the failed status and of the debit in your bank statement
Level 3: NPCI's UPI complaint portal
On the NPCI website, go to What we do → UPI → Dispute Redressal Mechanism. Fill in the transaction ID, bank, VPA (UPI ID), amount, date and your email, and upload the bank statement showing the debit.
Level 4: RBI Ombudsman
If the bank has not resolved it within 30 days, or you are not happy with its reply, file a complaint on the RBI Complaint Management System (cms.rbi.org.in). It is free and online. You can also call RBI's helpline 14448.
Sample complaint message you can copy
Subject: UPI transaction failed but amount debited – UTR [number]
On [date] at [time], I made a UPI payment of ₹[amount] to [UPI ID]. The transaction shows as failed but ₹[amount] was debited from my account [last 4 digits]. The amount has not been reversed within the timeline set by RBI for failed transactions. Please reverse the amount immediately and credit the compensation of ₹100 per day of delay as per RBI's circular on turnaround time for failed transactions. Screenshots are attached.
What NOT to do
- Do not search Google for a "UPI customer care number". Fraudsters post fake numbers. Use only the help section inside your app or your bank's official website.
- Never share your UPI PIN or OTP, and never approve a "collect request" to "receive a refund". You do not need a PIN to receive money.
- Do not install screen-sharing apps such as AnyDesk if a "support agent" asks.
- Do not pay again while the first payment is pending, unless it is urgent and you are ready to wait for the refund.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a UPI refund take for failed transactions?
For transfers to a person, the deadline is T+1 working day. For payments to merchants, it is T+5 days. Most failed payments are reversed within a few hours.
My UPI payment is pending for hours. Will it fail?
Pending payments usually settle as either successful or failed within 24–48 hours. Check your bank statement as well as the app.
Will I really get ₹100 per day if the refund is late?
RBI's rules set ₹100 per day of delay beyond the deadline. If it is not credited automatically, ask for it in your complaint and escalate to the RBI Ombudsman if needed.
Money was debited but the shop says they did not get it. Who is responsible?
The banks. Show the shopkeeper your failed status, pay by another method if needed, and raise a dispute. The debited amount should come back within T+5 days.
Does the new UPI MDR change refund rules?
No. MDR is a fee merchants pay on some payments from 15 October 2026. Failed transaction refund timelines do not change. See our UPI MDR guide.
The bottom line
A failed UPI payment almost always fixes itself within a day. If it does not, the rules are on your side. Keep the UTR number and screenshots, complain in the app first, and escalate step by step. Ask for the ₹100-per-day compensation if your bank misses the deadline.
