How to Update Aadhaar Online in 2026: Fees, Free Updates and Step-by-Step Guide

Many people put off updating Aadhaar because they assume it means a trip to a centre and a payment. In fact, one of the most common updates, uploading fresh identity and address documents, is free if you do it yourself on the myAadhaar portal. UIDAI has extended this free facility until 14 June 2027. The same update at an Aadhaar centre costs ₹75.

This guide explains what you can change online, what still needs a centre visit, the current fees and the exact steps. Information is as reported at the time of writing, so confirm on the official UIDAI website before you pay anything.

UIDAI's rules on exactly which fields can be changed online have been revised from time to time, so the portal will show you the options available for your record. Note also that Aadhaar can only be updated a limited number of times for certain fields such as name and date of birth.

Why update documents at all?

UIDAI encourages people whose Aadhaar was made ten or more years ago, and who have never updated it, to refresh their identity and address documents. This helps keep the record accurate and is useful for services that rely on Aadhaar authentication. It is not a way to change your address: if you have moved, update the address field with a supporting document.

Step-by-step: update documents on myAadhaar

  1. Open myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in yourself. Do not click links in messages.
  2. Log in with your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile number. If your mobile number is not registered, you will need to update it at a centre first.
  3. Choose the option for document update, and review the details already shown.
  4. Upload clear scans of your PoI and PoA documents from the accepted list. File size and format limits will be shown on the screen.
  5. Submit the request. You will receive an Update Request Number (URN).
  6. Track the status with the URN on the portal. Once approved, you can download the updated e-Aadhaar.

Step-by-step: update at an Aadhaar centre

  1. Find a centre using the "Locate Enrolment Centre" tool on the UIDAI website, and book an appointment if one is available.
  2. Carry your Aadhaar and original supporting documents.
  3. Fill the form, give biometrics if needed, and pay the official fee. Ask for the acknowledgement slip with the URN.

Children's Aadhaar: mandatory biometric updates

For children, UIDAI requires biometric updates at around ages 5 to 7 and again at 15 to 17. Biometric updates at those age windows are free of charge. Missing the update can eventually cause the child's Aadhaar to face problems at authentication, so schedule it when the child reaches the age.

Avoiding scams

  • UIDAI will never call asking for your OTP, bank details or UPI PIN. Never share the OTP with anyone.
  • Be careful about fake websites with names similar to myAadhaar. The official domain ends in .gov.in.
  • Do not pay "processing fees" to agents who promise faster updates beyond the official fee.
  • If something looks wrong, check whether your Aadhaar was used without your knowledge, and read our guide on checking the SIM cards issued in your name.
