The FASTag Annual Pass, launched by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on 15 August 2025, lets owners of private vehicles pay ₹3,000 once and cross national highway toll plazas for up to 200 trips or one year, whichever ends first.
It sounds like an obvious saving. Whether it is one for you depends on how often you travel and how much the tolls on your regular route actually cost. This guide gives you a simple way to check, plus the rules that decide what counts as a trip.

Quick answer
- Price: ₹3,000 when launched. NHAI may revise this from time to time, so check the current fee in the app before you buy.
- Validity: one year from activation or 200 trips, whichever comes first.
- Who can buy: owners of non-commercial private vehicles (car, jeep, van) with a valid, active FASTag linked to the vehicle.
- Where it works: national highway and national expressway fee plazas managed by NHAI and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. It does not cover state highways, state expressways or local toll plazas, where you continue to pay normally.
- How to buy: through the Rajmargyatra app or the NHAI website, with activation normally within about two hours.
Break-even maths: when does the pass save money?
The pass costs ₹3,000. If you use all 200 trips, that works out to ₹15 a trip. The break-even point is simple: divide ₹3,000 by the average toll you pay per crossing.

| Average toll per crossing | Crossings needed to break even | Verdict if you cross 200 times |
|---|---|---|
| ₹50 | 60 | You pay ₹10,000 without the pass, so you save ₹7,000 |
| ₹100 | 30 | ₹20,000 without the pass, so you save ₹17,000 |
| ₹150 | 20 | ₹30,000 without the pass, so you save ₹27,000 |
| ₹200 | 15 | ₹40,000 without the pass, so you save ₹37,000 |
These toll amounts are illustrative, so replace them with the actual tolls on your route. The key is that the pass wins easily for anyone who crosses a national highway toll at least once or twice a week, and may not pay off if you take just a handful of highway trips a year.
A quick example
Say you drive to work and your route has one national highway toll of ₹85 each way. A round trip costs ₹170 and counts as two trips on a point-based plaza. Over 100 working days that is 200 crossings and ₹17,000 in tolls. The pass costs ₹3,000. If, on the other hand, you use the highway only for two long weekend trips a month, that is about 48 crossings a year and the maths may be much closer.
How trips are counted
- Point-based toll plazas: every crossing counts as one trip. A to-and-fro journey through the same plaza counts as two.
- Closed (entry and exit) systems: one pair of entry and exit counts as one trip.
- The pass is linked to one vehicle's FASTag and cannot be transferred to another vehicle.
- When trips or validity run out, the FASTag goes back to normal wallet-based payment.
How to buy and activate the pass
- Install the Rajmargyatra app (or use the NHAI website) and log in with your mobile number.
- Enter your vehicle registration number. The system checks that your FASTag is valid and linked to the vehicle.
- Select the Annual Pass and pay the fee through UPI or another supported method.
- Wait for activation, which is normally done within a couple of hours, and confirm through the SMS or app status.
- Keep enough balance in the FASTag wallet for any tolls the pass does not cover, such as state highways.
Things to check before you buy
- Your FASTag must be linked to the correct registration number and fixed on the windscreen. FASTags registered to the wrong vehicle or flagged for KYC problems may be rejected.
- It is for non-commercial vehicles. Taxis, trucks and buses are not eligible.
- Check which of your regular toll plazas are covered and which are state-run, because the saving only applies to the covered ones.
- Read the current terms in the app. Details such as the fee and the plazas covered can be updated.
Who should skip it?
- People who use national highways only a few times a year.
- Drivers whose regular route has mostly state highway or city tolls.
- Commercial vehicle owners, who are not eligible.
